The Collision of Two Crises

The collision of two crises – the opioid epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic – is impacting the mental health of Ohioans and increasing the risk of substance misuse and abuse among adults and youth. Now, more than ever, the Opioid Alliance is committed to having a message in the market that raises the awareness of the need for parents and caregivers to continue to talk to their children about opioids and stress the importance of disposing of leftover pills and securing medication within the home.

City of Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts and Franklin County Public Health Commissioner Joe Mazzola have been steadfast leaders helping central Ohioans navigate both issues. Recently, they recorded public service announcements educating the public on the mental health impacts of COVID-19 and the correlative effect that has on substance misuse and abuse. The PSAs are a reminder that the primary means of reducing opioid overdose deaths is to prevent youth from ever starting on the path of substance misuse and abuse.
