ADAMH is pleased to welcome ETSS Tewahedo Social Services to its network of community behavioral health care providers. Having collaborated with ETSS in the past, ADAMH values the important work the organization does and looks forward to its continued contributions within the provider network. To help the community get to know ETSS better, the organization recently participated in a Q&A, sharing insights about their mission and work.
Who are you?
ETSS Tewahedo Social Services (ETSS) is a community focused nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to serve and empower New Americans, refugees and immigrants from over 80 countries. Guided by the principle that "All Humanity is One," we provide culturally and linguistically responsive programs that promote self-sufficiency, social integration and community well-being.
What services do you provide?
We engage individuals and families in programs including after-school and summer academics; cultural and socially competent programs; English for Speakers of Other Languages; job preparedness and placement; and family and community navigators for health and mental wellness. Our staff members speak over 50 languages to provide individuals and families with the services they need.
In what ways does ETSS support mental health and/or addiction challenges?
ETSS is a certified Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services prevention provider agency. Our Community Health and Wellness team conducts screenings, provides both internal and external referrals and offers support for coping and stress management. We connect clients to basic need resources including food, housing, medical care and transportation.
By providing culturally and linguistically appropriate materials through flyers, brochures and social media, ETSS reaches a diverse audience. Our outreach efforts and partnerships with other organizations serve as a path to client referrals. Our services also include Question, Persuade and Refer suicide prevention training and staff training on mental health, burnout and trauma.
Our youth program provides culturally appropriate prevention education for youth ages 5-18 years old focused on mental health and social-emotional learning, anti-bullying, safe dating and relationships, substance abuse prevention and more.
What makes your approach to behavioral health care unique?
Our approach to behavioral health care is unique because we provide services tailored to the diverse communities we serve. We employ Community Health Workers as community navigators who help address language and cultural barriers, ensuring accessibility and understanding. Additionally, we benefit from the expertise of a licensed social worker whose practice focuses on mental and behavioral health prevention and support. In our youth program, each site has a bilingual assistant to address barriers for language and culture while also providing support to parents.
